NEW: Tintype Making: the Basics

Make your own tintype portrait and still-life image in this special two-day workshop for beginners. Learn the basics of the 1850s wet collodion process used for making real tintypes. Mark Osterman teaches this informative and fun class in the same place where he taught the very first public collodion workshop back in 1995. All participants will also receive a copy of the new Scully & Osterman basic collodion manual, including formulas and sources of supply.
In an effort to present just the basic, hands-on element of tintype making, this workshop does not include illustrated lectures on collodion theory or viewing historic examples and wet plate era equipment that are featured in our longer workshops. If you wish, you may also register for a special one-day lecture class, History of the Tintype, immediately following this workshop that includes these elements.
Audience: Limited to 10, this two-day workshop is specifically designed for students and others on a budget. No prior experience is necessary for this very hands-on workshop.
Tuition: $300/$275 members, plus $30 materials fee
Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop two weeks before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than two weeks before a workshop start date. If the workshop is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class will be fully refunded. The Eastman House is not responsible for airline ticket cancellation costs or fees. The Eastman House may take and use images, still or video, for educational and promotional purposes.
Location and Scheduling: Daily sessions begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Unless otherwise stated, the workshops are held at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. Directions can be found at our website at www.eastmanhouse.org/visit/location.php.
Lodging: Lodging is not included in the cost of the workshop. Participants must make their own arrangements. The host hotel for workshops held at George Eastman House is the East Avenue Inn & Suites, www.eastaveinn.com. This hotel is within walking distance of the museum. Room rates begin at $99 per night. The East Avenue Inn & Suites also provides transportation to and from the airport. Reservations can be made by calling (800) 559-8039. Historic photographic processes have become an exciting alternative and even complementary technique to digital imaging. At George Eastman House, participants not only get hands-on instruction on the processes, but also get to view prime examples from the Museum’s incomparable collections.
No prior experience is necessary for most of these workshops. They are suitable for artists, photographers, students, teachers, and anyone interested in using these rare 19th century processes in the 21st century.
