The American Ivorytype has the appearance of a hand-painted ivory miniature. This mid-19th-century technique involves making a gold-toned salted paper print on thin paper and adhering it to a piece of glass. A second hand-colored, untoned salted paper print from the same negative is mounted behind the glass-mounted print, allowing the colors to filter through. The effect is soft and beautiful. Each participant in this workshop will make salted paper prints from both vintage glass and digital negatives.
We’re excited to teach a workshop on this process at George Eastman House for the very first time. Here’s your chance to learn and make images with this amazing technique.
Each participant will receive a manual on both the salted paper print and the American Ivorytype variant written by Mark Osterman.
