| In response to the tragic events of September 11,
photographer Nathan Lyons, known for his honest and often questioning
depictions of American culture, has created a poignant sequence of
images.
Photographing in both small towns and large cities, Lyons has captured
the extreme and often confusing variety of responses, from deep
reverence to blatant commercialization, manifested by ordinary
Americans.
This provocative sequence of images with multiple messages is powerfully
coherent and strangely disturbing. These photographs are engaging and
question the responses to this horrific event in the context of our
complicated society, along with memorializing the tragic loss of so many
innocent lives.
Nathan Lyons has exerted a profound effect on the field of photography
for over 45 years. In addition to his work as a photographer, Lyons is
a pioneering curator, educator, and arts administrator. Mr. Lyons is the
founder and Director Emeritus of the Visual Studies Workshop. The book
After 9/11 accompanies the exhibition. His previous books of photographs
include Notations in Passing and Riding First Class on the Titanic. He
is the recipient of the International Center of Photography’s Infinity
Award for Lifetime Achievement in Photography.
A hardcover book of the
same title is available for purchase
from Yale University Art Gallery.
