Seeing Ourselves will introduce American audiences to
historical and contemporary photographic masterpieces that were
previously unknown to them, or familiar only as reproductions. The
exhibition will be organized in broad and accessible subject-based
groupings that represent more than 150 years of excellence. The
groupings reflect the ways contemporary viewers know photography, thus
linking their understanding of the present to the practices of the past.
Seeing Ourselves gives broad public exposure and accessible context to
the impact of photography on our nation.
- American Masterpieces. In this introductory section of the
exhibition we will showcase acknowledged masterpieces including The
Steerage by Alfred Steiglitz, Nautilus by Edward Weston, and
Yosemite Valley, Summer by Ansel Adams, and others.
- American Faces. Americans have always been fascinated with
famous people. Their photographs have been used to create celebrity,
establish identity, and influence our perceptions. This section will
range from Nickolas Murray's Babe Ruth to Richard Avedon's Igor
Stravinsky.
- America at War. Of all the information that photography brings
us, nothing is more pressing than news about war. This section will
include A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg by Timothy O'Sullivan, to
Vietnam Memorial, Washington, DC by Hiroshi Watanabe.
- America The Beautiful. Timeless photographs that exemplify the
beauty and power of nature and an expanding America, these images
will include Lone Pine Peak by Ansel Adams and Desertscape, Death
Valley by Marilyn Bridges.
- American Families. The family has been the basic unit of
meaning in our lives. This section will include a variety of
examples such as Tenement Penthouse by Weegee and East Harlem by
Helen Levitt.
