ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House
pays tribute to Rochester-born Cab Calloway — one of the greatest entertainers
of the 20th Century — on the occasion of his 100th birthday with a screening of
his 1944 musical Stormy Weather at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21. As a bonus, we'll
also present Calloway featured in cartoons, short films, and other footage
spanning his 70-year career.
This Christmas Day (Dec. 25, 2007) marks the 100th birthday of Calloway
(1907-1994), also known as the "King of Hi-De-Ho." A legendary singer, dancer,
and bandleader, Calloway also left his mark on the movies. Stormy Weather
(Andrew L. Stone, US 1944, 77 min., 35mm) features four memorable Calloway
numbers plus appearances from other legends like Lena Horne, Fats Waller,
Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and the Nicholas Brothers.
Bonus shorts to be screened that evening include Cab Calloway's Hi-De-Ho
(1934, 10 min.) and Minnie the Moocher (1932, 7 min.), in addition to other
Calloway footage.
Admission is $6 general admission; $5 students; and $4 members.
