Photo Fun Workshops for Kids this summer at George Eastman House

Eight different weeklong workshops focus on special-effect pictures, photo crafts, mini movies, and darkroom and digital techniques

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A visual experience awaits curious campers this summer as George Eastman House presents Photo Fun Workshops for Kids. Eight different weeklong workshops in July and August — for children ages 7 to 14 — will focus on special-effect pictures, movie-making, photo crafts, and basic photography techniques.

The camps are dedicated to teaching children how to maneuver a camera and turn their pictures into artwork. The individual weeklong camps run from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Experienced Eastman House educators will guide the hands-on creativity and exploration. All cameras will be provided for campers.

For Ages 7 to 9

FREAKY PHOTOS
July 7 to 11

Campers will learn the secrets of taking trick "special-effect" pictures, trying a series of different techniques — from pinhole to multi-flash and digital photoplay.

TAKE IT! MAKE IT!
July 14 to 18

Combines a session of taking pictures with making photo-craft projects, including panoramic collages, handmade paper photo albums, and mixed-media frames.

THEN & NOW: BASICS TO DIGITAL
Aug. 4 to 8

This session will take campers through all stages of picture making — from chemical to computers. Campers will discover darkroom techniques, experimental and alternative processes, and digital manipulation.

For Ages 10 to 12

ON LOCATION
July 21 to 25

Go on a daily adventure with your camera. Campers will explore the Eastman House and grounds on a photo scavenger hunt; explore the East Avenue neighborhood on a "find it" tour; and take theme trips off-site for local photo shoots, including visiting the Seneca Park Zoo.

PHOTO FASHION
Aug. 11 to 15

Campers make their own wearable photographic creations! During the week they will use pictures in designing sunprint t-shirts, bandanas and buffs, necklaces, backpack accessories, and more.

DIGITAL DISCOVERY
Aug. 18 to 22

Campers take pictures with different kinds of cool cameras, scan or download them, and use PhotoShop tool to make custom masterpieces.

For Ages 13 and 14

DARKROOM TO DIGITAL
July 28 to Aug. 1

Campers will make pictures using darkroom techniques, experimental and alternative processes, and digital manipulation.

MAKING PICTURES MOVE
Aug. 25 to 29

Examine the science behind how we see pictures move, and then to jump right in to produce your own mini-movies. Campers will use a variety of animation devices, combining photography with illustration.

The cost of each weekly workshop is $110 ($100 for George Eastman House members), which includes a $10 supply fee. To receive more information about Photo Fun Workshops for Kids, visit www.eastmanhouse.org or call the Education Department at (585) 271-3361 ext. 232.
