Experience Lehman’s inspirational cinematography with screenings of three short films

For Release 2010-01-15

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House will host Rochester-based filmmaker and two-time Oscar® winner Robin Lehman at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30. Screening that evening will be Lehman’s two Academy Award®-winning shorts, Don’t and End of the Game, as well as his Oscar®-nominated short Nightlife. Lehman will introduce the films and talk with the audience following the screenings.

“Lehman’s inspiring and thought-provoking short films are brilliantly edited and gorgeously photographed works of pure, wordless cinema,” said Jim Healy, assistant curator of motion pictures, George Eastman House. “On the surface they are studies of natural animal and insect life, but Lehman’s intriguing placement of images create stories that speak poetically to human experience.”

Don’t (US 1974, 19 min.), which earned Lehman a 1975 Academy Award®, is a short film illustrating a saga of a Monarch butterfly, as the butterfly travels from one momentary landscape to another, essentially from country to city. Also winning Lehman an Academy Award® for Documentary Short Subject, this time in 1976, was End of the Game (US 1975, 29 min.), which portrays the savage existence of mammals on an African savannah, a stunning depiction of African wildlife. Lehman received an Oscar® nomination for the short film Nightlife (US 1979, 10 min.), which takes an astounding look deep in the Irish Sea.

In addition to the Academy Awards®, Lehman’s films have been recognized internationally and have acquired more than 100 awards from film festivals all over the world.
